The Amish solar panel tycoon who drives a Tesla Cybertruck.

American religious communities that once shunned modern technology are being transformed by an energy source that lets them power up machines while staying off-grid.

Megan Agnew, Gordonville, Pennsylvania.

Saturday August 31 2024, 6.00pm BST, The Sunday Times.

Ben Zook is what many consider a contradiction: an Amish electrician. He grew up off-grid in an Amish family in Gordonville, Pennsylvania. Their home was lit with kerosene lamps and never connected to the mains electricity. There was no telephone and he and his five siblings travelled to school by horse and cart. One Christmas his parents gave him a teddy bear which somehow repeated everything he said. To Zook, it was magic. He immediately took it apart to see how it worked.Today Zook, 41, drives a brand new Tesla Cybertruck, an enormous electric car which looks like it belongs on Mars. “I am an Amish electrician, so time changes everything. And I want to keep going forward.” For more on this story:https://www.thetimes.com/world/us-world/article/god-said-let-there-be-light-and-the-amish-installed-solar-panels-hhll9536b.

Nine juveniles from Reedsburg have been charged with disorderly conduct for harassing Amish families. Disorderly conduct has a fine of around $200, likely covered by their parents. The school administrator is distressed because the football team could not play two games.

It is time for restorative justice. These Reedsburg juveniles ought to be required to spend some time working on the farms with those hardworking Amish families to make restitution and to learn about their community. The adults around them should be distressed by the teens’ behavior, not making excuses because the incidents did not happen at school.

Carlos Whittaker spent seven weeks screen-free. Here’s how his idea of God changed.

The former worship pastor emphasizes that ‘Reconnected’ isn’t another book about why phones are bad. Instead, it’s about the beautiful things on the other side of the phone. August 23, 2024 By Ellie Davis.Religion News Service. (RNS) — It all started when Carlos Whittaker received that perky Sunday morning iPhone notification summarizing his time spent on his handheld screen in the past week. Seven hours and twenty-three minutes on average per day. Whittaker, an author and former worship pastor, did some quick math and realized that number translated to nearly 100 full days a year. If he lived to be 85, he’d have spent a decade looking at his phone. While most of his work centers around his social media community, his “Instafamilia,” he knew something needed to change. Amish abuse victims say culture keeps abuse hidden, but new generation is making changes. MAIA NEHME | Staff Writer, LNP/Lancaster Online. August 25, 2024.

A small, immobile lump concealed by layers of hand-stitched quilts caught the Amish woman’s eye as she stepped into her youngest child’s bedroom. Pulling back the covers, she discovered her then-6-year-old daughter curled in a ball. “Mom, there is only one way I’m going to go to school today,” the woman, granted anonymity over concerns of retaliation from her community, recalls her daughter saying. “There’s only one way that I’m going to come out from under these blankets, and that is if Jesus comes again.” For weeks, the little girl adamantly refused to go to her West Cocalico Township Amish school, where she was enrolled as a first-grader. Each day, her mother had to pull her out of bed and carry her to the van that picked her up for school, exasperated by the girl’s seemingly irrational tantrums. MAIA NEHME | Staff Writer, LNP/Lancaster Online. August 26, 2024. Picture an Old Older Mennonite girl growing up on an isolated Lancaster County farm, her days devoted to chores and Bible study. She believes her simple lifestyle, grounded in her faith’s emphasis on humility and forgiveness, will bring her closer to God. But not everything in this girl’s life is so simple. Amish & abused: Victims, critics say efforts to increase reporting, intervention is not enough. MAIA NEHME | Staff Writer, LNP/Lancaster Online.

Aug 25, 2024. The Smucker child sex abuse case disturbed many of the people who advocate for the protection of children in Lancaster County’s Amish community. On May 26, 2010, Jonathan Smucker, then 52, and Melvin King Smucker, 23, both of Martic Township, were charged with molesting multiple girls under the age of 13. The Smuckers, father and son, were members of the Old Order Amish community, as were their victims. Four years into his tenure on the Lancaster County Court bench, Judge Dennis Reinaker was tasked with sentencing the Smuckers, who pleaded guilty to their crimes. The judge had made sure other men charged with similar crimes spent decades in prison. He was not able to do the same in this case. For more on this story:

I broke away from my traditional Amish community. Here's what grabbed me most in the modern world — and what I miss. As told to Mia Jankowicz Business Insider.

August 28, 2024. This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Daniel Beiler, 33, an emergency medical technician and aid volunteer who grew up in a traditional Amish community in Pennsylvania. The following has been edited for length and clarity.

I was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, one of the main Old Order Amish places in the US. I grew up on a small farm in a little community surrounded by mountains and valleys — I was always hunting, swimming, and riding horses. We didn't have video games or a TV. No AC and no electric heating — we used a wood or coal stove. We traveled using horses and buggies; if we had to go longer distances, we'd hire a taxi. We had some rather intense family dynamics, but overall, the way I grew up was actually really neat. You can go to 10 different Amish communities and they have 10 different ways of doing it. We didn't have Rumspringa — where the Amish youth go out and sow their wild oats, drugs, alcohol, sex, that kind of thing. ASHTABULA, Ohio (AP) — The Coast Guard came to the rescue of five people who were clinging to a cooler in Lake Erie after their boat was swamped by a wave far off the Ohio coast, authorities said. Highway Patrol: Local Amish injured in road incident. Shelby Star.

August 9, 2024. At least two Amish people were injured in a road incident this week, according to North Carolina Highway Patrol. Sgt. B. Theis said a tractor trailer passed by the Amish, who were in a horse-drawn buggy, as it was heading down Washburn Switch Road near Lattimore. When the truck passed them, he said it spooked the horses who jumped a guard rail and overturned the buggy. He said no report was taken because it is not required as they were not driving a vehicle, and the Amish requested that Highway Patrol not make an incident report. "We were going to put it on an incident report, but they requested no report taken," Theis said. "There were some injuries but nothing life-threatening from what I understand." He said to his knowledge, the truck did not stop, but as there was no contact between the two, he was not required to stop. He said there were at least two people in the buggy at the time. https://www.shelbystar.com/story/news/2024/08/09/highway-patrol-local-amish-injured-in-road-incident/74736720007/

Why some Amish would rather go to jail than make simple update to a tradition that has been blamed for killing dozens. By Miles Dilworth, Senior Reporter For Dailymail.Com Published: 11:11 EDT, 4 August 2024 | Updated: 11:50 EDT, 9 August 2024. On Sunday, July 14, around 6pm, a 2006 Ford F250 careened into the back of an Amish horse-drawn carriage in Cumberland County, Virginia, killing an eight-year-old girl who was riding inside. Just over an hour later, a 2020 black Ford Escape smashed into the rear of an Amish buggy in Lowville, New York, killing a 17-year-old boy. Just like public education, cellphone use also an issue in Amish, Mennonite schools [The Scribbler];JACK BRUBAKER | The Scribbler Jul 29, 2024.Pennsylvania’s public schools are not alone in considering banning cellphone use during the school day. Old Order Mennonites want Amish children to stop bringing their cellphones to a combination Amish-Mennonite school in eastern Lancaster County. They also want the Amish to stop using cellphones at home.Amos B. Lapp, of East Earl, writes about this concern in “The Diary,’’ an Old Order Amish monthly newspaper. He believes kicking Amish kids out of the schools would harm the rapport Amish and Mennonite neighbors have with each other.

To make sense of this, the Scribbler consults Steven Nolt, professor of history and Anabaptist studies at Elizabethtown College. Nolt explains that in that part of Lancaster County, Old Order Amish and Old Order Mennonites have long shared school buildings because they and their children live so close together.

This arrangement has worked well, despite differences in use of technology. If a school was built by the Amish, for example, it has no electric lights. If built by the Mennonites, it has electricity.

Electrified schools or not, the Amish are far more open to using cellphones, inside or outside school, than the Mennonites. One outcome of the cellphone dispute, according to Nolt, could be that “the Old Order Mennonites suspend the longstanding practice of shared schools and the Amish would then have to build a number of new schools in that region just for their own children.’’https://lancasteronline.com/opinion/columnists/just-like-public-education-cellphone-use-also-an-issue-in-amish-mennonite-schools-the-scribbler/article_ec3ed428-4b78-11ef-b635-2f8c03d5cb6d.html

 Letter to the Editor: Maybe an Amish buggy should have seat belts;

Published 12:01 am Saturday, August 3, 2024By Letters to the Editor. My wife grew up in Ohio so, of course, over the years we have spent quite a bit of time there. I recently saw an Amish buggy going down Route 250. Yep, exactly the same 250 that goes parallel to I-64, at Zion’s Crossroads. Please note that this Ohio road has extremely wide paved shoulders (on both sides) that are intended to provide a safe passage for buggies. Now you say…who paid for that?

Well it’s true that there are many Amish folks in that part of Ohio and it is true that there are also much smaller roads which do not have shoulders like this. So maybe the state paid for them…I don’t know, but I do know that if we were to have roads like this in Virginia, the state would pay for them and that means the state taxes would have to go way, way up. I don’t think we have the money to do that! So who is going to pay for it? Let’s talk for a minute about why the Amish moved here. I think they moved here because the land prices and land taxes became very, very expensive in Ohio and Pennsylvania. I’m quite sure that land prices and taxes are much, much lower here. And because our taxes are lower, our roads are worse. For example, please consider that the road by my house has no line down the center and, in most spots, it has no shoulder at all…just a ditch. My wife has been complaining about this ever since we moved here but I really don’t want to pay for drastic improvements in the road. I might also mention that around here an Amish buggy does not have seat belts. We have laws that require seat belts in vehicles but apparently not in buggies. These folks drive around with buggies literally overflowing with kids… none of which are restrained… and if you pay attention to The Farmville Herald, you know what this means. It’s simply not safe.https://www.farmvilleherald.com/2024/08/letter-to-the-editor-maybe-amish-buggy-needs-its-own-road/

Amish Communities Are Trading The Horse And Buggy For E-Bikes.Long viewed as tech-averse, the Amish have become enthusiastic users of electric bicycles, so much so that one Ohio community has become a testing ground for new models. By Alan Ohnsman, Forbes StaffForbes.Aug 4, 2024,06:30am EDT.

MIDDLEBURY — Out on C.R. 28 toward Middlebury, Amish family and friends gathered for an old-fashioned good time Thursday afternoon threshing a field. The process involves separating the fruit of grain from the rest of the dried plant. It can be done by hand or using a machine and even right in the field as the photos show. The work results in grain for feed or bread, while the bails of straw produced as a byproduct can also be fed to livestock, used in gardens or farms as mulch, among other things. While the process used to be common place, on Thursday, the Amish of Middlebury said they were just coming together for a fun afternoon. https://www.goshennews.com/news/an-old-fashioned-threshing/collection_3cc36f14-4546-11ef-83f0-3353d78e38cd.html

Amish school to be built near Cecil. Published on Mon, 07/22/2024 - 2:00pm.

By: NEW Media Staff. Shawano County supervisors are expected to approve a zoning request July 24 that would allow for the construction of a school for the Amish community near Cecil. Daniel Mast, acting as an agent for property owners Henry Stutzman and Allen Lambright, requested a zone change on a 2.09-acre parcel on Old Road 22 at state Highway 22 in the Town of Washington. Currently, the site is vacant agricultural crop land. “The other school got full, and we decided we need another one,” Mast told the Shawano County Planning, Development and Zoning (PDZ) Committee on July 3. The proposed school was approved by the Town of Washington on June 3 and the PDZ on July 3. https://www.newmedia-wi.com/content/amish-school-be-built-near-cecil
